“How Do I…” create a wakeup agent?

It’s no fun waking up each morning to go to work, but how about doing it in style. Probably won’t make you feel better, but it’s better then an annoying buzzing sound from your alarm clock. Read on to see how to create a repeating wake up agent…

Pull composer up and go to agents at the bottom left. At the top left scroll down to wakeup. In the middle left pane click on “new”. A pop-up box appears and asks you to name this wakeup agent. I’ll call it “7am music”.

Now to the right is a big pane with lots of options. I’m going to do music for this write-up so I will work on scene one. You can also have lights ramp, tv come on, and thermostat temperature change within this agent. So I check the media box which makes the “choose media” button bold. Select this button and a new pop-up opens.

From here you can select what source you want to turn on. Depending on your system it could be downloaded music, movies, rhapsody, tv station, or a radio. For this write up I will select “broadcast audio” and choose xm station 32 and select ok.

If the room you’re going to select allows, you can also select the starting volume level on the main pane below the “choose media” button.

Alright, now it’s time to schedule this agent to execute. I want it to repeat on a weekly basis so on the bottom left of composer you should still be on agents. Now select scheduler at the top left. On the middle left select “new” which brings up a pop-up box.

I’m going to name is 7am music to make things simple. Then change the time to 7am for obvious reasons. Then click on the “repeats” button. Now I select “weekly” which pulls up the 7 days of the week. Select which days you want the agent to execute and select ok.

At the bottom left go to programming, then at the top left (device events pane) scroll down and select scheduler agent. Below that select the schedule we just created. Then at the top right (device actions pane) scroll down to the wakeup agent. Below that select the agent we want to execute, in this case “7am music”. Below that select what room you want it to occur in and then drag this to the middle. You can choose as many rooms as you want as long as you have an audio source there connected to your control4 system.

There you go, at 7am every week day xm channel 32 will play in the master bedroom. If you want to expand on this you could also create a variable that you could toggle with a keypad button. You could tell the wakeup agent only to execute when this variable is true. That way you can easily turn it off if you have the day off (holiday, vacation, sick, or playing hookie). If you do this, I would also create a schedule to reset the variable to true sometime right after the wakeup agent would have executed. I would also tell the keypad color to change to red or something when the variable is false and return to normal color when true. That way I can visually know that I toggled the variable.
