How one phone may change the way i do installations “a little bit”. So for weeks one of our other editors has been on me about switching my phone to an android based phone. Well this is what i have come up with after playing with it this weekend, and how it could affect the way myself, and other integrators do their installs. Yeah ,yeah, i can already hear you Iphone fan boys, but hold onto your antennas ” with your right hand please” as i explain.
We have a lot of dealers / integrators that visit our site so i thought i would add a blog that they can relate too. This is also for our tech savvy readers. So here are the apps that make your phone as important as your tool bag.
SPL Meter Full Version : I am sure “well i hope” that many of you theater installers use one of these to get a comfortable listening area. After many conversations with many experts the average about 75 to 80 dB SPL (Sound Pressure Level) at the seating area, with occasional peaks allowed to 85 dB SPL (C-weighted) is totally acceptable.
RTA Pro Analyzer: For advanced users for audio calibration. This app is very accurate. I was shocked at how accurate it was side by side with a pro analyzer.
Connectbot. SSH “secure shell” client. If you use any network equipment, especially a/v and automation equipment on a network this is a must have. You can also copy and paste to other programs with this app. As an example i SSH’d into my HC1000 and rebooted. Nice and useful.
Wifi Analyzer. This app turns your phone into a wifi analyzer that shows the channels around you. Â It will allow you to find a less crowded channel for your network and show the strength of other networks around you! Now if they would make WiSpy for this phone so i could do zigbee this would be even better.
Sprint Hotspot. This one is obvious, out on that job and internet isn’t ran to the house. You need some spec’s or product info? The hotspot is the answer.
Network Mapper. This one is awesome. It will scan the entire network your EVO is connected to on WiFI.Once it is done it displays all devices, names of the devices, mac addresses of devices, and can be emailed directly to gmail in an XML format. You can also select any of these devices and run a port scan. It will find all open ports, tell you what they do, and let you mail this xml document also.
Stud Finder: Cool if you forgot yours. It actually uses the compass to find magnetic variations when passing by screws. I did find that this thing works awesome as a tone generator finder!
Metal Detector. It is similar to this app. Also cool, can find pipes and romex in walls pretty easy. just for fun i put a nut on the end of a wire drop, dropped it down the wall, and well, found it.
RDP. Remote Desktop. Awesome for walking around a house to setup switches, dimmers, and small devices when using composer. This is probably one of the first phones i have seen that has a screen big enough to make this comfortable.
FLASH SUPPORT! So your my.control4.com flash nav actually works. Enough said.
There are a lot more useful apps out there for us techies. Do you have any favorites? Please post them as comments!!!
