Movie Guardian App! An App That Will Change The Way You Navigate Movies.

February 6, 2011

Before I even go into the second awesome app from Green Wave Technology let me go into the thought process that may have brought this app to fruition. From the moment we have been able to do movie cataloging and selection through Control4 navigators we have wanted feature enhancements. The first that comes to mind is some type of parental control. Most of us have also wanted larger thumbnail images. A few have even asked for the ability to be able to play directly from the thumbnail image and skip the movie info screen. unfortunately we have never seen these enhancements. Well at least until today. This will be a page by page instructional and review of the app that should answer any questions so that you can make an informed purchase. So lets dive into the app.

So first lets go through the set up. As you can see the good people at Green Wave gave us plenty of choices for languages. This is awesome, but for all purposes of this little article we will stick with English. You 2 choices here are quick installation and custom installation. Most people are in a hurry now a days, but take my advice, choose custom installation. In the custom option you will find a couple extra useful choices that are not found in the quick set up like changing the text color from green to another color.

The second page in the set up is interesting for compatibility in a national sense. This page lets you select which Countries movie rating standard you want to use.

Ratings page! This is where you will check mark the ratings you want hidden from normal navigation. I will explain a little further with the next page on just what this does for you.

Page 4 is pretty self explanatory. This is where you get to create your password. Why would you need a password you ask? For parental controls of course! No more having to worry if your kids are going to accidentally select your classic version of Porky’s while trying to select Porky Pig! This password is used in conjunction with the Lock/Unlock feature. This allows the movies that you don;t want available to the kids to be totally hidden in navigation unless you put your password into the unlock section.

Next they ask for your email address. Am I gonna get spammed here? Really? No there is actually a use for this. This is just in case you forget or lose you password for your parental lock. This is stored for password retrieval only.

Page 6 Gives you the options associated with the lock. Obviously if you have kids you will want to check “Always Start Locked”.

Now we move onto a feature enhancement for navigator I have always wanted. Personally I could care less about the movie info screen. I just want to press the thumbnail and the movie starts. Well finally no matter which side of this fence you may be on now we have the choice! And note that this is on a per navigator basis! So while in my bedroom it may go straight to the movie from the thumbnail, in the guest room I can leave it so that they get the movie info.

Another little set up page that I thought was important si the next page in the set up. Choosing your text color. Now while I am sure the prepackaged green text for this app is a tribute to the Green Wave brand name the color itself is a little too much for me. I chose the simplicity of white.

Now you see a confirmation screen acknowledging all your choices for review.

Finally you are done with the set up. You are ready to protect your movie collection and enjoy navigation as it suits us!

The App Home Page. The selections are listed by function. All are obivious but i would like to bring 2 to your attention.

If you want to go tweat your initial set up simply go to the settings icon here.

LOCK. This is the important one. This allows you to unlock those movies you have hidden. This icon also gives you the status whether your movies are locked or unlocked.

Movie Selection. Nice big pretty icons. Easy to see, Easy to read. This picture is from the 7″ navigation which shows movies 4 at a time. The on screen navigator lets you view 12 large easy to see icons. This is so much nicer than those little thumbnails we see now in 2.0.

Info screen. Straight and to the point just like I like it. The on screen version gives you the full info with description while the 7″ gives the basic info as seen above.

So that it in a nut shell. I do need to add that Movie Guardian does not require a driver, but a dealer must disable your default Control4 Movie application to fully child proof your movie server. Thank you Green Wave from all us here at C4Central and The Soho Shop for changing the way we manage our movies in navigation. You have made the feature enhancements that most users have been asking for for years finally available.
