3 Benefits to Wall Mounting your Flat Screen TV
Last Updated on Wednesday, 31 August 2011 12:17 Written by Tony Phillips Wednesday, 9 February 2011 08:52
There are several benefits to mouting your television to the wall rather than having it on a stand. The obvious and typically most beneficial is that a wall mounted TV will free up more space or enable you to have less furniture in your viewing area. This is particularly useful in rooms that are limited in floor space or even wall space. Wall mounting enables consumers to make the most of their wall space by utilizing the space above a fireplace in a living room or perhaps above a dresser in a bedroom.
Aside from creating more space, mounting your TV to a wall makes it less likely for the device to receive damage. With the introduction of motion gaming platforms such as the Wii, Playstation Move and Xbox Kinect, the chances of damaging your television has significantly increased. Below is a video of how an interactive game turned tragic for the user’s television.
Another benefit of mounting your tv to the wall is to deter theft. It is much easier for a theif to steal a free standing tv than one hanging on a wall. The video below shows just how quickly a theif can steal a tv that is on a stand.
For those who have children or children who frequently visit their home, another great benefit of mounting your tv to the wall is too keep it out of the reach of little ones. Many people know how frustrating it can be when an input gets changed or a button gets pushed by a curious child who enjoys to push buttons on your devices for fun. While it may not keep them from the remotes, it can keep them from trying to climb up on an entertainment center and keep them from potentially injuring themselves.
So, if you are on the fence about whether or not to mount your tv on the wall, consider these benefits when making your decision.

Movie Guardian App! An App That Will Change The Way You Navigate Movies.
Last Updated on Sunday, 6 February 2011 12:39 Written by Joe Whitaker Sunday, 6 February 2011 12:36
Before I even go into the second awesome app from Green Wave Technology let me go into the thought process that may have brought this app to fruition. From the moment we have been able to do movie cataloging and selection through Control4 navigators we have wanted feature enhancements. The first that comes to mind is some type of parental control. Most of us have also wanted larger thumbnail images. A few have even asked for the ability to be able to play directly from the thumbnail image and skip the movie info screen. unfortunately we have never seen these enhancements. Well at least until today. This will be a page by page instructional and review of the app that should answer any questions so that you can make an informed purchase. So lets dive into the app.
So first lets go through the set up. As you can see the good people at Green Wave gave us plenty of choices for languages. This is awesome, but for all purposes of this little article we will stick with English. You 2 choices here are quick installation and custom installation. Most people are in a hurry now a days, but take my advice, choose custom installation. In the custom option you will find a couple extra useful choices that are not found in the quick set up like changing the text color from green to another color.
The second page in the set up is interesting for compatibility in a national sense. This page lets you select which Countries movie rating standard you want to use.
Ratings page! This is where you will check mark the ratings you want hidden from normal navigation. I will explain a little further with the next page on just what this does for you.
Page 4 is pretty self explanatory. This is where you get to create your password. Why would you need a password you ask? For parental controls of course! No more having to worry if your kids are going to accidentally select your classic version of Porky’s while trying to select Porky Pig! This password is used in conjunction with the Lock/Unlock feature. This allows the movies that you don;t want available to the kids to be totally hidden in navigation unless you put your password into the unlock section.
Next they ask for your email address. Am I gonna get spammed here? Really? No there is actually a use for this. This is just in case you forget or lose you password for your parental lock. This is stored for password retrieval only.
Page 6 Gives you the options associated with the lock. Obviously if you have kids you will want to check “Always Start Locked”.
Now we move onto a feature enhancement for navigator I have always wanted. Personally I could care less about the movie info screen. I just want to press the thumbnail and the movie starts. Well finally no matter which side of this fence you may be on now we have the choice! And note that this is on a per navigator basis! So while in my bedroom it may go straight to the movie from the thumbnail, in the guest room I can leave it so that they get the movie info.
Another little set up page that I thought was important si the next page in the set up. Choosing your text color. Now while I am sure the prepackaged green text for this app is a tribute to the Green Wave brand name the color itself is a little too much for me. I chose the simplicity of white.
Now you see a confirmation screen acknowledging all your choices for review.
Finally you are done with the set up. You are ready to protect your movie collection and enjoy navigation as it suits us!
The App Home Page. The selections are listed by function. All are obivious but i would like to bring 2 to your attention.
If you want to go tweat your initial set up simply go to the settings icon here.
LOCK. This is the important one. This allows you to unlock those movies you have hidden. This icon also gives you the status whether your movies are locked or unlocked.
Movie Selection. Nice big pretty icons. Easy to see, Easy to read. This picture is from the 7″ navigation which shows movies 4 at a time. The on screen navigator lets you view 12 large easy to see icons. This is so much nicer than those little thumbnails we see now in 2.0.
Info screen. Straight and to the point just like I like it. The on screen version gives you the full info with description while the 7″ gives the basic info as seen above.
So that it in a nut shell. I do need to add that Movie Guardian does not require a driver, but a dealer must disable your default Control4 Movie application to fully child proof your movie server. Thank you Green Wave from all us here at C4Central and The Soho Shop for changing the way we manage our movies in navigation. You have made the feature enhancements that most users have been asking for for years finally available.

When Good Devices Have Bad Drivers Vol.1 MechoShade C4 2 Zone Zigbee Interface
Last Updated on Thursday, 27 January 2011 06:37 Written by Joe Whitaker Thursday, 27 January 2011 06:34
It is only too often that we find an awesome piece of equipment with a driver that just does not work. Now it is getting even more difficult to modify those pesky driver with the addition of DriverWorks and the ability to encrypt drivers. So where does that leave us? Programming work arounds thats where.
Recently i was able to put the MechoShade C4 2 Zone Zigbee interface through the motions. The device is one of the easiest blind controller modules I have ever seen. Simply plug it into the motors RJ45, Id it in the project, and your done. It is smaller than the Card Access pieces with a better mounting method, and no batteries or transformer required.
Then I moved onto control and here’s where it all went bad. I would expect a driver like this that once added it would pop up on the navigators right? No way. So then you would normally think, I’ll just add a Blind in and bind it and be done. Nope not happening either. After trying this method I did get blinds on the navigator but no control. So whats next? How do I control this easy to install blind controller?
First you need to have 3 things loaded in the project for this set up to function properly.
1 The MechoShade 2 Zone Interface Driver
2 A standard dual relay blind driver
3 a 6 button keypad driver “Why the 6 button key pad? I’ll explain that shortly”
So to start off we will want to get all the 2 zone interface device actions associated with the 6 button keypads device events. Note that the 6 button could be real or a dummy 6 button. We are mostly using it as a place marker for all the blind controllers actions. MechoShade did a very good job of giving us a device that is capable of more than just up and down. This controller does up, down, stop, and through programming 3 set levels. This is a big jump from what most people are used to when integrating blinds with Control4.
So the six button programming should look like this.
Button 1: open/up
Button 2: Stop
Button 3: Close/Down
Button 4: Go To MidPoint1
Button 5: Go To MidPoint2
Button 6: Go To MidPoint3
So now you have physical control with a real 6 button keypad or virtual control with ghost 6 button keypad. So now how do I get this on Navigator?
The most reliable way is simple. Go to the dual blind relay that i told you was needed earlier in programming. and program each of the blind relay device events “starts going up, starts going down, stops” to the press action of the associated button on the 6 button you created earlier.
So why Did I not just program “when dual relay blind starts going up > open shade motor on port a of MechoShade interface? Consistency is why. For some unknown reason, “which may be because they are both a blind proxy”, when programming is done this way it is not consistent. Sometimes they will go up sometimes they won’t. Some times there is even a 3 minute delay. Though testing using this 6 button method has proved to be consistent on every press.
Now there are still 3 more actions left right? The 3 mid points. These could easily be added as a custom button. Or if you are fancy enough base them off a scheduler. Blinds make great ambient light controllers. So if you set schedules you can effectively have the blind set at a certain level based on the amount of sun pouring in.
So there you have it. This is my my first what to do with good devices with bad drivers. If you guys have any suggestions on more great devices with bed drivers feel free to drop me a request!
