4Store App Review #7: Photos / Flickr

This is a pretty cool app for those of you that are photo buffs or who like to keep track of photos friends post on Flickr.

Set up was easy. The configure page in your apps at the 4store allows you to save any flickr account by user name and saves this to you app. Easy enough, so how does it work?

Flickr Search is the first icon in this app. Right off i will say this works well if using the on screen keyboard. The remote control letter function is still a little lacking as with all apps. I think that is a work in progress. But using the on screen key board works well, and the search function is great. I typed in my city and presto, lots of pictures of my home town. You can search for pictures of just about anything!

The second icon is the Featured icon. This one will bring up a featured menu which includes Across America, Cities of the World, Outer Space, and Sports. Clicking on any of these will bring up plenty of eye candy on any of these subjects.

The third icon is where those accounts you entered in the configure page come into play. This is the Friends icon. When this is chosen it gives you the names of everyone you have added. Select a name and it gives you all the albums from this user with a thumbnail of the album. Select an album and you have access to all of the photos this user has added to the album. When clicking on a photo it brings it full screen for all to see.

From a glace this is a great app for people who use flickr and for those who want to see whats out there. I will say that on a large display the picture quality was better than passable for those used to digital photography. The app is easy to set up, easy to use, and of course easy on the eyes.

4Store App Review #5: Calendar…… The App that may saved my Marriage!

So for you guys that know us at The Soho Shop You know we travel a lot. A lot. My wife is always asking where I will be, when I will be home, when I am leaving, etc. Well now she can simply look at the C4 screen and see where I am at! And I can go on here and see her calendar to see the kid’s appointment, school times, and everything else she requires me to keep track of.

Set up of this app was pretty simple. First make sure you have a Gmail account and a Google calendar made.  Fill in the required fields in the configure portion on your 4store.com account, up to 6 accounts. And your’re ready to go. The app is simple to use, and will probably be one of the most used apps in our household! Control4, a leader in affordable IP-based home control and entertainment systems, today announced the 4Store™, an online marketplace where customers can access applications that will extend the functionality and interconnectivity of Control4® smart homes and enable new levels of customization for homeowners.

4Store is the first app store designed specifically for the smart home and offers individual applications that can be integrated with multiple household devices. 4Store gives Control4 customers the option to download apps that serve a wide variety of functions – from Facebook to online dinner reservations to customizing Kwikset deadbolt locks to controlling energy usage with Eaton outlet monitors. Control4 customers already easily control lighting, temperature, music, entertainment and energy usage from a simple interface, but now with 4Store apps, homeowners will be able to further customize their system to provide information and control functionality specific to their lifestyle.

“The introduction of the 4Store could have the same kind of impact on the smart home that the iTunes App Store has had on the smartphone,” said Will West, CEO of Control4. “It provides a unique way for homeowners to personalize their control system so they get more enjoyment from their homes and more efficient use of all their devices and systems.”

4Store applications fall into four general types: Enhanced Home Control, Information, Social & Entertainment, and User Interface Customization.

Enhanced Home Control Apps – Many apps are designed specifically to enhance the control of third party devices that are installed in the house. Apps being shown at CES include:
Pioneer – Set advanced receiver properties such as zone volume, inputs and easy tuner control.
Eaton – Enable advanced power monitoring and on and off capabilities for outlets.
Peak Software TED Energy Monitor for Control4 – Use The Energy Detective TED 5000 to monitor energy usage in your home, including real-time and historical usage and built-in rate structure support.
CardAccess Home Tracker – Allows homeowners to monitor important aspects of the home like lighting and temperature, in a floor plan topology. Additionally, by tapping into Card Access motion detectors, homeowners can monitor occupancy of the house via the same floor plan.
Kwikset – Easily manage your Kwikset ZigBee deadbolt by creating unique lock codes for temporary access or for individual family and friends, view status of locks and view history for any lock in your home.
Information Apps – These apps provide information such as weather, news, blog readers and other RSS feeds.
Social & Entertainment Apps – Access popular social networks and websites including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, OpenTable, and NetFlix or play games like Tetrad through your TV or touch screen.
UI Customization – Specialty apps enable users to select a UI theme that changes the look and feel of their Control4® system to match their decor or show favorite photos.
When any home is made “smart,” owners dramatically increase efficiency by gaining the ability to connect and control multiple appliances from a single system. The introduction of the 4Store takes this connectivity one step further. Users can select any app that they find beneficial and then use that app to increase the functionality of their home, streamlining many of the day-to-day tasks that unnecessarily consume time and energy.

4Store is expected to be available to the general public in the first half of 2010. Leading consumer electronics companies and Control4® dealers are currently creating applications for the 4Store using a software developers kit released in late 2009. Control4 will preview 4Store at The International CES in Las Vegas from January 7-10, 2010.
