How to enable remote access for your Control4 iPhone app over 3G – impress your friends or annoy family without even being home.

Port forwarding is currently the best way to access a system (and its cameras) remotely. This will work from any WiFi or 3G connection inside or outside the home. Here’s a summary of the process. If you’re not familiar with port forwarding, more info about the concept is here and detailed instructions for most routers can be found here.

In your Router’s configuration:
1. Forward all traffic on ports 5020 (this is for communication with Director) and 80 (this is for art work which is delivered via http) to your Director’s LAN IP address (the controller running Director should have a static IP address on your LAN)
2. Note the WAN IP address of your router (If you can get a static IP address from your ISP, it would be more reliable. Otherwise, you may have to check it periodically.)

In the Contro4 My House app on the iPhone/Touch,
1. go to Info -> Director
2. Click on “Add…”
3. Enter your router’s WAN IP address and name it (e.g. Remote
Access)
4. Click “Connect”
5. Update the project (it’s faster to do this when you are on the LAN)

Additionally, Control communication is over port 5020. HTTP communication for the artwork is over port 80. Rhapsody is over port 5555, but I’m not sure you’ll be able to get this remotely.

All of those ports must be forwarded to the IP address of your controller if you want artwork & Rhapsody in addition to control.
